In my initial previews, I wagered New World would be a far more compact game than it appeared to be when it finally came out. But now I’m starting to agree with everyone who dragged me for the line I previously said about “dungeons in droves,” which you can find in my Amrine Excavation preview from back in May https://xerometer.com. It made sense to me at the time – I was comparing New World to Destiny 2 in my head, based on how simplistic New World’s action combat struck me as during that preview event – but now, after 170+ hours logged on my main character (and over 240 hours logged between both the main and press versions I own on Steam, which also accounts for the amount of time I spent waiting in queues), I think it’s time for me to walk that sentiment back and call it a lesson learned.

The game mechanics offer PvP combat with and without questing. Before leaving a safe-zone settlement, players have the option to set the “flagged state” – which will make them vulnerable to attacks from other flagged players and vice versa. PvP Flagged state is activated after 30 seconds cooldown which starts after players leave the zone of settlement.

For the uninitiated, the Scott Pilgrim comic book focused on the titular character, a guy who tries to win the affections of Ramona Flowers. The attraction is mutual, but Ramona can’t be with Scott until her seven evil ex-boyfriends are out of the picture. So, Scott must battle a gauntlet of evil exes (and their minions) to be with the girl he loves. The premise is decidedly silly, but it works, both in the comic and this game. It serves as the basis for seven core, themed levels that are laid out on a Super Mario World-style map.

Characters have their own individual move sets, which can be expanded upon by gaining enough experience, and are also able to use weapons and summon Knives to assist them (Each character has a different effect). During co-operative play, certain actions can be performed such as simultaneously taunting to defeat enemies or reviving fallen comrades before they lose a life. Defeating enemies earns coins (stylized Canadian currency) which can be spent on health items or attribute boosts. Players can also enter Subspace areas which act as bonus areas where extra coins can be earned.
